Protect Your Freshly Blasted Metal with BlastShield
"Now that I have freshly blasted metal, what I do with it? How do I protect it from flash-rusting?" These are common questions that our customers ask us. Depending upon the humidity and the quality of the metal (iron content), you will typically start to see the effects of flashing in about 3 days. In worst case scenarios (high humidity and high iron pieces) we have seen flashing occur in less than 24 hours. Don't let your freshly blasted metal flash!
As a service to our customers, we offer BlastShield as an option to protect your blasted metal. BlastShield is a zinc-phosphate protective spray the prevents freshly blasted metal from flash-over. Using a process known as “PHOSPHATIZING” or “CONVERSION COATING,” BlastShield is this first step in the preparation of steel or galvanized steel for preventing rust before painting, priming or powder coating. Technically, BlastShield chemically converts ferric oxide to iron phosphate, and within a couple of hours converts iron phosphate to iron chromo-phosphate, chemically by an oxidation conversion process, leaving a corrosion resistant surface.
Answers to Common Questions:
- BlastShield soaks into your metal and dries. It is a metal conversion process. There is NOTHING that you need to remove or any special prep. required...you can paint, prime and powder coat directly over BlastShield.
- You CAN do weld repairs on metal that has been treated with BlastShield.
- We apply BlastShield for you as a service. You get your metal back protected.
- Our BlastShield service is very affordable. We can quote you a price at the time we quote you for media blasting.
- BlastShield provides MONTHS of indoor flash-over protection. Our personal experience is that you can expect up to approx. 5 mos. of protection. We have a sample in our showroom that has lasted over 2.5 years!
